Winged

by Matt Bowness | May 25, 2014

From April 30th until May 17th I had a show at the gallery at The Guild in Charlottetown. Nnow that the show is off the walls, I thought I should put the images online so other people can see them!

The show was called "Winged" because I used beetle wing covers.  Models were covered in the wing covers using liquid latex to help them stick.  Once the latex dried the models could move around and everything stayed in place.

Most of the images are mirror images, I wanted images the were clearly human, but still difficult to identify.  It was about organic shapes, and the symmetry found in the beetles themselves.

This first shot is the only one I hung that wasn't a mirror image, I thought it was stunning and I didn't want to mess with it so I used it as the promotional image for the show.

So, here are the images, and thanks for looking.

Thanks to the models, my assistants, and my makeup artist.

Charlottetown, PEI

by Matt Bowness | December 18, 2013

Where are you located?
I get asked this question in emails fairly often, so I thought I'd take a second to tell you about the location of my shop.
I am located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.  Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada, and Charlottetown is it's capital city.  It is a city of about 33,000 people in a province of about 140,000.  People settled here earlier, but Charlottetown wasn't incorporated as a city until 1885.
Charlottetown often promotes itself as the "Birthplace of Confederation", but what they don't tell you is that, while it's true that the leaders of Canada met here in 1864 to discuss forming a country, they left without forming a country.  Canada would not be formed until 1867, and Prince Edward Island would not join until 1873.  So, the fact that our claim to fame is a conference with no result should tell you how much we have going for us!
The Charlottetown Conference of 1864 is not our only claim to fame, we are also the setting of a famous novel.  "Anne of Green Gables" was written by L.M. Montgomery.  Montgomery lived on PEI, and the book was set here as well.  I would include a photo of the book, or of Montgomery, but the owners of all things Anne would probably sue me immediately.  Anne's image is governed tighter than drum, and if you plan to do anything involving freckles or red pigtails, then the descendants of L.M. Montgomery want a taste.
Our government is corrupt, but it's equally corrupt.  The left patronizes the left and the right patronizes the right, and they just take turns holding the reigns.  It's actually quite quaint.  But it's a small price to pay when you're surrounded by beaches.  Not that I ever get to the beach, but it's nice to know that they are there.  It is a beautiful place for about 6 months of the year (May-October), it's a frozen wasteland for 4 months (Dec-March), and the other two months (November and April) can go either way.
Here's a shot out the front window of my store today.  That is Water St. and it's one of the most heavily trafficked streets in town!   It's not like this everyday, but when it is, there's plenty of time to write blog posts!
